School Teachers in Ecuador Respond to
Meridian Tapping Help
Fall classes had not yet started in Quito, Ecuador when, the administration of the school, reaching an unprecedented decision, assigned a full three days of in-service training to the learning of an "unknown" technique where one taps on selected acupuncture points to counteract stress. The teachers and staff were told only that this method was called EFT and had been of use in other parts of the world. The workshop leader was a specialist in using meridian tapping with children and families who had flown in from the U.S. Till Schilling had traveled from Indiana to conduct the workshop. Because he grew up in Bolivia, Spanish is one of Till’s two mother tongues, so it came naturally and he was looking forward to this assignment. As he sat quietly waiting for the participants to arrive, he set out the written materials expecting the usual 15 to 20 group members that he had seen so many times in U.S. workshops, and he prepared to greet them. When the doors finally opened, however, 60 people filed into the room and Till saw them sitting before him, waiting with mixed emotions. Many of them looked tired and doubtful, but the entire school staff, to a person, was attending this training. Till realized immediately that he had to engage their interest and quiet their doubts or there would be no workshop, so to speak. So he plunged into the "breathing" demonstration often used by Gary Craig where one's lung capacity an be radically increased after tapping. He asked the group to rate their generalized feeling of “powerlessness” about the challenges facing them, and to give a rating of "10" for a feeling of being utterly and totally powerless. Almost 90% of the participants rated themselves a "10", and almost none had less that an "8". When the group had raised their lung capacity through tapping (from an average of 4 to that of 8) Till asked how anxious they felt about their powerlessness now . The sensation had dropped from an average of 9 to a 5. The group showed alert interest as they reported on their experience. One teacher shared that she had almost not come to the meeting that morning because of severe congestion in her eyes -- they were flamingly red and tearing, and an injured thumb had been throbbing. Both of these conditions had suddenly cleared up with the tapping exercise, and the others in the group, now actively engaged, were reporting similar changes. What became obvious almost immediately was that participants were under so much pressure in their own lives that they had to be helped first before attention was turned to the school children’s problems. "How about we leave the children aside right now and get to a place of personal peace, and make this workshop about YOU?" Till asked them. They were all with him as he proceeded to conduct the three day Level 1 and Level 2 workshop. The workshop members returned to the classroom on the second day more relaxed, more alert, and more present -- and, very unusual for Latin American countries, they were all on time for Day Two! When the participants broke up into small groups to practice tapping with one another, one group reported their satisfaction at getting to know a "wonderful" other colleague, whom they had never been acquainted with before, she had been quiet and retreating and they had not known her value. There were tears in her eyes and theirs as they talked about it. It was at that moment that Till made a promise to himself, and to the class, that somehow (he had no idea how at that point) he would come back to Ecuador in November to continue this workshop. Towards the end of the 3 days, the group addressed the extreme challenges the children in this school faced. Many of them have been relocated from the countryside in a mass immigration and are facing the bewildering urban world for the first time. They are frustrated and discouraged by among other things the extreme family disruption that this brings with it. Their reaction to all this is expressed through anger and a sense of hopelessness. As you can imagine, this is detrimental to a positive learning experience. Till suggested ways that the teachers and staff can begin to use EFT to help these youngsters. He demonstrated the manner in which they could use a lovable TappyBear (a therapeutic stuffed toy with "tapping spots" on it) to help the children, as he donated some "Tappy's" to the school and requested that the teachers take notes on the children's responses to EFT in the interim so they could all discuss this in November. How will Till be able to return? Clearly money will be a needed to allow him to travel to Ecuador, and also hopefully be able to pay a local EFT practitioner to supply ongoing periodic help to the school staff in the meantime. Fortunately, an unexpected source of financial support makes the raising of these funds a growing possibility. Educational specialist Paul Widdershoven, a longtime advocate of the use of Meridian Tapping for school children has recently developed what I (Pat Carrington) consider a truly remarkable program on DVDs that shows children how to use Meridian tapping and EFT for over 70 different school related problems. The program literally covers the whole gamut of such problems as the child selects the ones to work on that relate to his or her own life. In support of the Ecuador project, Paul has agreed to donate $15 from each sale of the CD (they sell for $27.00 ) to the "Ecuador Teacher's Assistance Fund" and I would urge you to sample some of the children's videos shown free on his site. If you should decide to buy the CD's, you will be helping to fund the Ecuador program at the same time that you purchase a superb holiday gift for a child in your life. There is also a possibility for you to donate directly to the fund. To explore these possibilities and find out what the CD is about go to http://www.imagr8kid.com/ecuador.php
